U.S. stocks wavered, with investors continuing to worry that stronger-than-expected economic data will prompt officials to hold interest rates higher for longer, potentially weighing on the economy next year.
The S&P 500 was roughly flat in early Wednesday trading, a day after suffering its fourth consecutive day of losses. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%.

- Futures tied to the S&P 500 fell 0.2%. Contracts tied to the technology-focused Nasdaq-100 declined 0.5%.
- The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was at 3.473% from 3.512% late Tuesday. Yields and prices move inversely.
- Brent crude, the international benchmark, was trading at $80.26 a barrel, up about 1%.
- Bitcoin fell 0.7% from its level 24 hours earlier, according to CoinDesk, at $16,862. Its price has largely traded between $16,000 and $17,000 in recent weeks following the collapse of crypto exchange FTX.
- Bitcoin was down about 1.1% from its level 24 hours earlier, according to CoinDesk, at about $16,809.
- Ethereum stood at about $1,229, down 2.1%.
